The heatsinks machine is a passive heat exchanger that transfers heat. The radiator is usually a metal part, which can be connected to a device that releases energy in the form of heat. The purpose is to dissipate the heat into the surrounding fluid to prevent the device from overheating.
In many applications, the device is an electronic component (such as CPU, GPU, ASIC, FET, etc.), and the surrounding fluid is air. The device transfers heat to the radiator through conduction. The main mechanism of heat transfer in heatsinks machine is convection, but radiation also has a slight effect.
There are two different types of convection:
Natural convection-the movement of fluid particles is caused by local changes in density, which is due to the transfer of heat from the solid surface to nearby fluid particles.
Forced convection-The movement of fluid particles is caused by additional equipment such as fans or blowers.
The heatsinks machine is designed to significantly increase the contact surface area between solids and fluids, thereby increasing the chance of heat transfer. The surface area of a typical ASIC in contact with air may be only 1600 square millimeters. The surface area of a typical radiator used to cool the equipment may be 10 or 20 times this value.
